The Red Death - TP

  1. THE RED DEATH: Title Page - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the fan press book, "WHISPERS, Vol.4, No.3-4, 1982". It is the title page illustration for a proposed film presentation titled, "The Red Death," written by Ray Russell, based on Edgar Allan Poe's story, "The Mask of the Red Death".

Stuart D. Schiff is the gent (a dentist by profession) who edited and published, "Whispers" fan magazine as a hobby. Although Whispers started out as a quality fanzine, Schiff managed to attract some of the best professional writers in the fantasy field by paying professional rates for stories. He did the same with the illustrators who appeared in his "fanzine," and that included me.

Actually, an issue of Whispers looked more like a book than it did a magazine, and because the stories were written by professionals it seems illogical to refer to Whispers as a "fanzine".

But the cost of producing such high quality issues became so great that eventually Whispers collapsed under the weight of all the expenses.

Schiff is a good looking man with a warm and friendly smile, and a collector of all sorts of things in addition to books and art. I have not heard from him for years, but the last word I did hear; he was collecting "coffins" for a hobby!
